Modeling Intangible Entities in the Cultural Domains for Digital Archiving (DCMI)

May 19, 2021 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM (EDT)

There is a variety of new cultural domains for which we need to design metadata schemas. It is widely recognized that data models are crucial to design metadata schemas – we need to identify objects for which we create metadata. This webinar aims to present a set of generalized data models designed for metadata about resources in cultural domains such as intangible cultural heritage and popular culture. The presenter will first introduce the generalized data models and then discuss data models designed in the Media Arts Database project and related projects in which the they are involved. The webinar content will be organized based on the research and projects listed below in which the speaker is involved. - Shigeo Sugimoto, et al., “Metadata Models for Organizing Digital Archives on the Web: Metadata-Centric Projects at Tsukuba and Lessons Learned”, Proceedings of DC-2018, pp.95-105, - Senan Kiryakos. Shigeo Sugimoto. “The representation of a multimedia franchise as a single entity: Contrasting existing bibliographic entities with Web-based superwork portrayals”. LIBRES, 28(2), 40-57, 2018, - Chiranthi Wijesundara, Shigeo Sugimoto. Metadata Model for Organizing Digital Archives of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Linking Cultural Heritage Information in Digital Space, LIBRES, 28(2), 58-80, 2018 - Chiranthi Wijesundara, Shigeo Sugimoto. “Shifting from Item-centric to Content-oriented: A Metadata Framework for Digital Archives in the Cultural and Historical Domains”, Proceedings of Asia-Pacific Conference on Library Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP 2019), pp.298-312, 2019 - Shigeo Sugimoto, et al. “A Generalized Data Model for Digital Archiving in Cultural and Historical Domains”, a book chapter (in press) - Media Arts Database homepage, - Japan Digital Theatre Archives (JDTA) homepage,  Objectives: (1) Data Modeling for Digital Archiving of Cultural Entities: Fundamental aspects to model tangible/intangible entities in the cultural domains for organizing them as a digital collection (2) Data Modeling for Media Arts (manga (Japanese comics), animation, video games, new media arts and performing arts): Data models as a foundation for metadata schema development in new cultural domains as a case study (3) From Item-centric organization to Content-oriented organization of metadata for digital collections: Shift in the organization for digital collections from traditional item-centric resource organization to content-oriented resource organization in the Internet and Linked Open Data environments.
